Kondor what's in a name, nothing.
What's in a name EVERYTHING?
Kondor CC formerly known as Everglade cricket
Club from 1981 to 1989. A collection of ragamuffins
made up from, employees, owners, friends of Everglade
Windows and a crew who used to meet up in the
great White Bear in Hendon, fondly known as the
'WB'. Known as the 'WB' because some of the men,
who were not allowed to frequent public bars and
didn't want their spouses to know where they went
every Friday night code-named the bar as 'WB'.
The poor women folk thought their men were meeting
a friend whose nickname was WB. Sorry, to all
ladies who had been lied to all to for all those
years!
This was a team of people who wanted to get together
and have a good competitive Sunday with a get
to together in the evenings. Played only 'friendly'
matches on Sundays. Most of the teams played against
were teams who played in Saturday league competitions
and wanted to hone their skills by playing Everglade
thinking we were easy fodder for the 'pros'. Talk
to some of them and they will tell you we had
some surprising talent who quite often gave smell
of leather whizzing by their nostrils.
Around 1986-7, some of the old boys from Everglade
had finally ran of stem and new young blood had
to be found. More members were found through word
of mouth and mainly from youth who used to waste
a lot of their talent hanging around snooker clubs.
As new blood started coming in, each member contributed
towards introducing other wasted talents hanging
around other social houses.
By 1990, there were sufficient members with aspirations
to show that talent and as result; a decision
was made to join a league.
Team 90 was formed and carried on as Team 91.
For those of us who think there is wool in our
brains and not grey matter, that was the years
1990 and 1991.
This team was sponsored by Tesco, yes Tesco!
We won two indoor leagues and two cup final and
runner up in third final. In summer 1991, Team
91 became Kondor. Kondor was named as a team name
in order to join a league and became part of Middlesex
Premier League. (Tesco didn't want to sponsor
any more). The sponsorship mantle was taken by
Central Circus Club known as the 'Dungeon'. The
dungeon helped Kondor for a good 15 years. This
was a good fruitful relationship.
In 2006, new sponsors were found, The Midlands,
'The Mids' of Hendon.
What's in name Everything. Kondor was named as
a condor but with a 'K'. The Condor soars high
above the mountains, sniffing out his pray. It
can coast for hours thus needing stamina, patience
and perseverance. When the opportunity arises,
it pounces.
This is the ethos behind what this team is about.
Each player volunteers to play. Wait for their
opportunity. Once its there, pounce and become
part of that team and part of a belief where each
team member is there when anyone requires their
help. Become part of a group who will support
them when it's needed. Become part of a commonality
which shares beliefs and values to keep each one
on their correct path. Irrelevant of their religious
or cultural background. This is what's in a name.
The name KONDOR.
Those that cannot play for whatever reasons come
and support. Kondor has fanatical fans. These
fans and players, known as 'The Kondors' have
migrated together to many parts of the world to
watch World Cup competitions. India, South Africa
and next West Indies. They follow teams all around
Europe. Including Holland.
Up to 2007 not one member who has played for
Kondor or has been a member has joined another
Sunday League team.
An extension to further these values, Kondor
Golf Society was also formed.
Years 1992 and 1993 were successful for Kondor.
Twice missing promotion to division one by 4 points.
Years 1994 to 2005 was a rollercoaster ride. The
team was yo-yoing up and down various divisions.
BANG, came year 2006. Kondor won the knockout
cup. By far the greatest success for the club.
To top this up, we won the third division title.
What a final! Winning by 3 runs in a low scoring
match. Both the opposing team and supporter will
never forget the atmosphere. Never have there
been so many supporters for a final in this league.
Years 2005 onwards has seen Kondor revitalised
with many new young blood. We now a great mix
of young with the experienced. Its exciting times.
Long may this continue?
To change with the times, the team now has 3
selectors and an elected committee to share the
load of team and administration issues. (For those
who think this perfect…we have still been
fined many times for not attending league meetings.
Come on boys take responsibilities).
